The Kennedy Center Honors-The 20 Best Performances, Part One

One of the specials that this author enjoys every year is CBS’ The Kennedy Center Honors.   Since 1978, the ceremony honors men and women who have given contributions to American Culture through music, movies, television and theater.

Past honorees have included Neil Simon, Aretha Franklin, Julie Andrews, Tony Bennett and the late Lucille Ball and Ray Charles.

This year, the Kennedy Center will honor Meryl Streep, Yo-Yo Ma, Neil Diamond, Sonny Rollins and Barbara Cook.

Jacobelyacharjournalist.com has put together a list of 20 must see performances that you should see before December 27, 2011.

#20: Spoonful of Sugar-Kristin Chenoweth

Tony-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth paid homage to Dame Julie Andrews as she belted out the signature Mary Poppins song when Andrews was honored in 2001.

#19: Born to Run-Melissa Etheridge

Rocker Melissa Etheridge sang one of the Boss’ popular tunes when Bruce Springsteen was honored in 2009.

#18: Coat of Many Colors-Shania Twain

Shania Twain made an appearance in the 2006 Kennedy Center Honors to pay tribute to country queen Dolly Parton.    The Canadian superstar’s cover connected perfectly with the audience.

American Idol Season 3 winner Fantasia brilliantly delivered her interpretation of this Elton John and Bernie Taupin song, which moved the singer-songwriter to tears during his 2004 tribute.

#15: Baba O’Riley-Rob Thomas with NYC cops and firefighters

The Matchbox Twenty singer-songwriter produced an incredible closing number for the 2008 tribute to The Who’s Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey with the help of 100 members of New York City’s finest policemen and firefighters.

Legendary rocker Sting paid tribute to dear friend and fellow rocker Bruce Springsteen when he sang his 2002 hit with a backing choir.

#13: Abbey Road Medley-Steven Tyler

Rock legend Steven Tyler paid homage to Sir Paul McCartney when he performed a medley of songs from the Beatles’ classic album Abbey Road during the rock icon’s 2010 tribute.
