Singer-songwriter Daniel Sobrino is the latest artist to tackle The Five Question Challenge!

When he was 19-years-old, Mr. Sobrino moved to Los Angeles from Mexico City to pursue his dream of working in the recording industry.

Using his musical influences such as Sia, Adele and Coldplay as guides, Mr. Sobrino began building his own library.  He is currently working on his first EP: Born Again and released three singles including “The Power of Us” and “Losing It.”

For this edition of The Five Question Challenge, Daniel talked about some of the challenges that he faced in the industry and his latest single: “Box.”

Jacob Elyachar: When did you want to pursue a career in music?

Daniel Sobrino: Since I was kid, I always had a love and passion for music. I learned a lot from my mom’s side of the family because all of them are musicians, so every time we got together, all of us played music and did all types of covers especially a lot of Beatles songs, because my uncle is a huge fan. They inspired me to do it professionally and so I decided to leave Mexico after graduating from high school to pursue my career in music.

JE: What were some of the challenges that you faced and how did you overcome them?

DS: Getting comfortable on stage was one of my biggest challenges. I was very insecure. It was very hard for me to accept that I was good enough to perform on stage. I pushed myself a lot and try to perform as much possible and it just started fading away with time. I just needed to believe in myself and find the right confidence.

JE: Could you please explain your songwriting process to my readers?

DS: Most of the times I start playing random chords on the piano and sing whatever comes out, then I work on the lyrics.  Most of the time my friend and producer, Hao Wang, comes up with a chord progression and I sing a melody on top of it, it is pretty cool! I always like to experiment and see what other ways I can try to connect with music but those two examples are the ones I use to write most of the times.

JE: Your latest single, “Box” is one of your most personal songs to date. Why did you decide to record it and how long did it take to record from conception to release?

DS: Everything started when Hao came up with a chord progression in the studio. When I heard it, I really felt it deep in my heart so I started singing and got the melody in one take with a few lyrics like “I’ve been living in a box.” Then, I called my friend, Christina, who is an amazing singer-songwriter and we worked on the lyrics together. This song helped overcome a lot of my fears so I’m very thankful it came to life and happy to have written it with my best friends.

JE: What can fans expect from you in 2014?

DS: My fans can expect new songs, a new me, and powerful strong messages.
