It is a pleasure to welcome back 610 Sports Radio personality Danny Parkins to Jake’s Take.

Since the last time he visited, The Danny Parkins Show evolved into The Drive.  The transition has not only helped give Danny and his co-host, Carrington Harrison, develop a stronger fanbase in the Kansas City area, but attract notable commentators from both the sporting and pop culture world.

In this edition of The Five Question Challenge, Danny talked about his favorite segments from The Drive and the most difficult sport to talk about on the show.

Jacob Elyachar: Last year, “The Danny Parkins Show” transformed into “The Drive.” What were the challenges that you faced during the transition and how did you overcome them?

Danny Parkins: It was not that hard since we had already been doing a four-hour show. The main difference was that there was more pressure and expectation on doing the show in afternoon drive, the most coveted time slot. I think there were more challenges when my show went from being solo to adding Carrington (learning to work with a new person) or when it went from two-to-four hours because of the additional content. This type of “challenge” was the welcomed kind because it came with a promotion.

JE: What are your favorite segments? How do you implement them on each broadcast?

DP: I know Carrington and I love “Therapy Thursday.” It was Carrington’s idea and I admittedly thought it was very skeptical. We have people call and text us for advice about random things and I never thought people would want to ask a couple of 20-somethings about their marriages… But I was wrong. It’s great. I like talking to Bill Maas during Chiefs season and also was a fan of something we added this year called “Inside the Mind.”  We asked Chiefs players about things that were going on in our lives like “Can you get your girlfriend a Groupon for your anniversary?” or “What do you do when a one night stand takes home your favorite hooded sweatshirt?” Both listeners, and the players, really respond to our questions.

JE: What is the most challenging sport for you to talk about?

DP: I think baseball is the most challenging because while they play every day, you cannot put too much weight on the outcome of any single game or really even any series of games. There’s just too many. So keeping baseball fresh and hip, when the demographics of the sport tend to skew old and slow, is a challenge. Hopefully, the Kansas City Royals win this year and make it easy on us.

JE: In your professional opinion, what is the outlook for the Kansas City professional sports teams for the 2014-15 season?

DP: We did a topic about a week ago on if 2014 was the highest the expectations have been simultaneously for the Royals and Chiefs at the same time since Carrington had been alive.  For the most part, the answer was, “I guess it is.” The Royals were good in the 80’s and the Chiefs weren’t. Then it flipped in the 90’s. The Royals have not been good since and the Chiefs have consistently disappointed. This year, not only are the Royals coming off an 86 win season and the Chiefs a playoff game, but Missouri won the SEC East in football, Kansas State football should be ranked, Sporting KC won the Major League Soccer title, and KU Basketball is KU Basketball. It is great time to be a KC area sports fan.

JE: Why should my readers tune in to “The Drive”?

DP: Carrington and I try to make you laugh every day! There is a lot of sports, but there is also a lot of ridiculousness that frankly you do not hear too many other places, if anywhere, on the radio in Kansas City.

You can listen to “The Drive” weekdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on 610 Sports Radio!
