The Masked Singer: Season Nine lit up the Bat Signal to commemorate the DC Comics Superheroes Night!

I thought it was odd that the FOX celebrity undercover singing competition did highlight the House of Ideas’ heroes since their parent company (Disney) owns the rights to Captain America, Captain Marvel, the Fantastic Four, Spidey, and the X-Men. However, the DC Comics Superheroes were my first foray into pop culture, so I was happy the show would highlight them.

Three new contenders – Gargoyle, Squirrel, and the Wolf – entered the picture hoping to join the California Rolls in the Masked Singer: Season Nine quarterfinals. Which performer stole the show and channeled their inner Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Catwoman? Did the panelists (Ken Jeong, Nicole Scherzinger, Robin Thicke, and Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg) correctly deduce the eliminated performers? Or did fan favorite Medusa gain a rival in the second chance round as a panelist used the “Ding Dong Keep It On” bell? Read on to find out!

Nicole (dressed as Catwoman) opened up with Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero” as Nick recognized several DC Comics props, including the Christopher Reeve Superman costume and the 1989 Batmobile. The Gargoyle was the first performer to take the stage. His pre-performance package had an “I Love LA” bumper sticker, a jukebox, hot sauce, and a $$$ credit card. He sang “One Call Away,” and I was impressed with his vocals. I heard Ne-Yo’s voice throughout the performance. Jenny called the version “phenomenal” and stole Nicole’s heart. Shazam: The Fury of the Gods stars Zachary Levi and Dame Helen Mirren called the clue – “concrete” and “record maker.” Robin suggested Los Angeles Chargers star Antonio Gates, while Ken channeled his inner Riddler and guessed The Weeknd. Jenny ended the guess with Odell Beckam, Jr.

Wolf Mask appeared on stage and transported themselves to the Masked Singer stage. The pre-performance package featured a photo of Andy Garcia, a saxophone, the Leopard’s head, an image of Nick Cannon’s “Hero,” and is friends with Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, and Andy Samberg. I thought I heard Michael Bolton’s voice coming out of Wolf Mask when he sang The Doors’ classic “Break On Through (To The Other Side).” Robin called the performance “cool” and loved his unique tone. Zachary Levi and Dame Helen Mirren’s second clue was “Timberlake,” The Wolf confirmed that he collaborated with Justin Timberlake. Robin guessed Michael Bolton, and Nicole joined him with the guess, while Ken suggested Richard Marx.

The Squirrel sassed her way onto the stage. Her pre-performance package included figure skating, a smiley face sticker, revealed that she made out with Tom Cruise and a fairy tale castle. She sang P!nk’s “Try,” accompanied by Jim Lee’s artwork. Squirrel was the weaker of the three vocalists, and I thought it was Demi Moore. Legendary comic book writer and artist Jim Lee drew a particular clue called “hero time.” Jenny guessed Katie Holmes, and Ken thought Margot Robbie. Finally, Robin guessed the legendary actress Uma Thurman.

The Masked Singer audience and panel advanced both -the Squirrel and the Gargoyle — to the Battle Royale, sending the Wolf Mask home (WOW! That’s not right!) Robin and Nicole double-downed their guess of Michael Bolton and now Jenny joined them, while Ken failed to convince the audience that Wolf Mask was Richard Marx! Robin, Nicole, Jenny, and I were right! MICHAEL BOLTON WAS THE WOLF MASK!!!

During the Battle Royale, Gargoyle infused R&B into his cover of 3 Doors Down’s “Kryptonite,” while Squirrel showcased her husky vocals in her version. Before the show went to break, it seemed like the panel was on separate pages. Jenny praised Gargoyle, while Robin thought that Squirrel deserved to move on. The Squirrel advanced to Sesame Street and while Jim Lee handed her the scepter, Gargoyle said his goodbyes. Robin, Jenny, and Ken doubled down with their respective guesses: Antonio Gates, Odell Beckham, Jr., and the Weeknd. Nicole concluded with the round with Mario. But before he could unmask Jenny saved him from elimination!

Next week, the Masked Singer is heading to Sesame Street!
