Jake’s Take’s New Music Reviews: Week of March 25, 2022

Artists to Watch:

Jake’s Take’s Artists to Watch is back! Here are some of the artists and bands that could shake up the music industry.

Rosalía’s Motomami continues her hot streak in the music industry. (Album cover property of Columbia Records)

MOTOMAMI by Rosalía

Rosalía is one rising star that is taking the music world by storm. The Pop Latino star won a Grammy and was nominated for several American Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards. Her third studio album, MOTOMAMI, combines several musical genres, including experimental pop, alternative reggaeton, and avant-garde. Rosalía recruited several top producers and songwriters such as Adam Feeney, Chad Hugo, Pharrell Williams, Pablo Díaz-Reixa, and James Blake to co-produce or co-write her songs. The Weeknd and Dominican rapper Tokischa also make cameo appearances on the album. Rosalía’s MOTOMAMI does have several standout tracks, which could play a role in the 2023 Grammys race, and she is going to be one exciting recording artist to watch in the years to come. B+

Tracks to Download: “La Fama,” “Chicken Teriyaki,” “Bizcochito,” & “Delirio De Grandeza.”

Fool Me Once – EP by Tiana Major9

Grammy-nominated East London-born Jamaican R&B and hip-hop star Tiana Major9 received praise from Rated R&B and Billboard for her work. As I listened to her extended play, Tiana Major9 reminded me of the first time I heard Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You.” Like the Queen of Hip-hop Soul, Tiana Major9 will captivate listeners on all three songs. I cannot wait to see what she does next! A-

Tracks to Download: “2 seater,” “Try Peace…” & “Oh God!”

“Retrograde” by Annabel Gutherz

Montreal-based recording artist Annabel Gutherz released a new single: “Retrograde.” When I first heard the song, I was immediately drawn in by the B-52s inspired new wave sound. I genuinely think “Retrograde” does have the chance of being an early contender for Song of the Summer. Bravo, Annabel! A-

“Never Get Out of These Blues Alive” by JD Simo

2022 could be the year of JD Simo. The Nashville-based singer and guitarist will be the only guitar player on the highly anticipated Baz Luhrmann-directed Elvis Presley biopic ELVIS. Before the Austin Butler-Tom Hanks film is released on June 24, JD Simo will release plenty of new music. One track that could delight blues-rock lovers is “Never Get Out of These Blues Alive.” The guitar riffs are superb, and I loved listening to JD’s craftsmanship. B+

“Perfect Drug” by LYLVC

North Carolina-based rock band Lylvc is blending rock and rap with excellent results. Singer Alyse Zavala, rapper Oscar Romero, keyboardist Cameron Gillette, bassist Kenneth Kaval, guitarist Seth Morgan, and drummer Ryan Powell make up the band. “Perfect Drug” is a spectacular song from start to finish, and I feel that they could dominate the rock charts on both radio and streaming. A-

“Ellen” by Sitting on Stacy

Southern California rock band Sitting on Stacy rounds out this edition of Jake’s Take’s New Music Reviews. This trio comprises vocalist Hoyt Yeatman, bassist-vocalist Kyle Hart, and drummer Trevor Smith. Like their previous single, “This Summer’s Day,” “Ellen” hits on all cylinders and will excite pop rock-pop punk fans. This trio amazes me, and I hope to see them conquer the award show circuit in the future.
