Jacob Reviews….The Iron Lady

Meryl Streep delivered a powerful performance as Margaret Thatcher. Photo property of Pathe.

The Iron Lady is finally out in all theatres.  This movie focuses on retired Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep) as she reflects on her past from her humble beginnings as a grocer’s daughter to the apex of her political career as the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom while taking out her dead husband, Denis’s (Jim Broadbent) belongings.

This biographical film is brilliant from start to finish as it delivers a couple of outstanding performances, a tremendous screenplay and perfectly weaves historical moments that are sprinkled throughout this film.

Meryl Streep delivered one of her best acting performances of her legendary career as the esteemed Baroness Thatcher.   When watching this film, many moviegoers would think that Meryl sounded like Mrs. Thatcher.    Streep showed range that perfectly balanced dramatic moments (when she confronted her political opponents and even her own party) and comedic moments (her vocal lessons and arguments with her deceased husband’s ghost).

Another strong performance that was featured in this film was Jim Broadbent’s portrayal of the ghost of the late Denis Thatcher.  He had excellent chemistry with Streep and was part of the comic relief in this film that included his sudden appearances and disappearances.  The relationship that was portrayed in this film could remind moviegoers about the bond that Thatcher’s greatest ally:  the late Ronald Reagan shared with his wife, Nancy because it showed that even though Margaret could handle life on her own, she still needed the support from Denis.

Abi Morgan’s screenplay produced numerous emotional moments.  From showing Thatcher’s paranoia around her peers during her early days in Parliament to using archived footage to show the anger and frustration of her fellow countrymen during the infamous 1984-85 miners’ strike.

Iron Lady’s filmmakers made the historical aspect of the film more valuable as they used more footage that perfectly illustrated Thatcher’s challenges that she faced in her term including the struggles with the IRA, the Falklands War and the sinking of the ARA General Belgrano.   Besides adding footage of Thatcher’s struggles, they also included happier moments including the real Margaret Thatcher dancing with Reagan and her arrival at 10 Downing Street.

Final Thoughts and Grade: This film is one of the better historical films that has come out during the 2010s.   Streep and Broadbent are the heart and soul of this movie and proved that they were the right people to take on the mighty roles of Margaret and Denis Thatcher.   A-
