This site has tackled numerous historical films in the past couple of months. Some had featured brilliant acting performances like Meryl Streep in the Iron Lady or contained a brilliantly structured screenplay similar to Moneyball. Unfortunately, Red Tails had neither. In this edition of Jacob Reviews, I will discuss why the film had some success but contained one big mistake.
The successes
Now Red Tails has a terrific ensemble cast of incredible actors that help deliver the story of the Tuskegee Airmen and how they made a crucial impact during World War II. Movie viewers will be impressed to see Cuba Gooding, Jr. back on the silver screen after a five-year absence. He perfectly portrays the pipe-smoking Major Emanuel Stance and showed great chemistry with members of the cast. Bryan Cranston also delivers a short but impeccable performance as the bigoted Col. William Mortamus.
Another success in the film was that it met the historical accuracy that a lot of movie watchers expect. Red Tails definitely shows off what the Tuskegee Airmen’s duties were from looking for enemy troops on the ground to accompanying the bombers to their drop off zones. In addition, it also addressed the racial tensions earlier in the film but it also showed how they got along to reach a common goal.
Finally, every moviegoer will enjoy the fight scenes and the special effects that were featured in the numerous battle scenes. They were well executed and it left viewers on the edge of the seats.
The mistake
The biggest mistake that this film had been that it was too long. Was it necessary to put a love story between Joe “Lightning” Little (David Oyelowo) and Sofia (Daniela Rush)? This reviewer thinks that it was unnecessary because there were several storylines that could have possibly played out including the relationship between Martin “Easy” Julian (Nate Parker) and his forceful father or the first time that Julian and Little met.
Final Thoughts and Grade: Was Red Tails a fantastic film or a complete disaster? This author believes that this film is worth watching because of great acting, historical accuracy and the fight scenes. But make sure that you have enough time on your hands because it can drag on. B
