Yesterday, the Associated Press broke the news that longtime Green Lantern writer Geoff Johns will be leaving the title after nine years.

Johns was very instrumental in bringing Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps to the forefront of the DC Universe and will be missed.

Here are six potential candidates that could take over the title once Johns vacates his position in May.

Peter J. Tomasi

This writer/editor has written or co-written some of DC’s fan-favorite titles including Batman & Robin, Brightest Day and Outsiders over the years.   In addition, he played an important part in helping Johns rejuvenate the Green Lantern Corps.   He will also be leaving his title Green Lantern Corps in May, which could mean that Tomasi could continue the adventures of Hal Jordan in June.

Gail Simone

Gail Simone has a tendency to rejuvenate every character that she touches.  Her runs on Batgirl, Birds of Prey, Secret Six and Wonder Woman are considered to be fan-favorites and if she tackles Green Lantern, Simone will definitely change the flavor of the series that could possibly bring interesting changes to Hal Jordan’s life.

Jeff Lemire

One rising DC Comics writer that could potentially take over for Johns is Jeff Lemire.  Fans and critics have praised his work with Animal Man, Justice League Dark and The Nobody and Lemire could actually make the Green Lantern universe a little bit darker and scarier.

Chris Claremont

Chris Claremont changed the rules of superhero comics and turned X-Men into one of Marvel Comics’ most powerful franchises.    Claremont is a master in creating epic space operas and he could take Hal, Guy, John, Kilowag and the gang on interesting adventures.

Grant Morrison Batman Run

Grant Morrison

The Scottish writer is known for writing epic stories that changed the foundations of every character that he touches.   While Animal Man, the Doom Patrol and the JLA greatly benefited from Morrison’s pen, the X-Men and Batman’s foundations were rocked to their respective cores and fans are still seeing the implications of his runs today.   While he is focusing on his massive Multiversity story, Morrison should turn his attention to Green Lantern and try to fill the void left behind by Geoff Johns.

Brian Azzarello

While Brian Azzarello focused more on crime and horror titles including 100 Bullets and Hellblazer, he successfully tackled DC Comics’ Big Three: Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman throughout the 2000s and 2010s.    Fans could strongly rally around the title and continue to make the book’s hot streak of constantly being in the Top 20 Best Selling Comics of the Month.

Who do you think should write Green Lantern?
