‘Batman Beyond,’ ‘DBZ’ headline Day 1 of SDCC 2019

It is the most wonderful time of the year! Today kicks off the fiftieth anniversary edition of San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC).  

Jake’s Take is breaking down the hottest panels that will happen during this epic pop culture celebration.  Here are the significant events that will take place during Day One of SDCC’s fiftieth anniversary celebration.

DC Meet the Publishers  (Thursday, July 18 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM; Room 6DE)

Attention SDCC attendees! Want to know what will happen in the DCU? DC Comics co-publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee will have the answers at their annual Meet the Publishers panel. As a regular attendee at their New York Comic-Con panel, if you go to this event, you might see several creators who might drop some significant news about upcoming projects.

Batman Beyond 20th Anniversary (12:15 PM to 1:15PM; Hall H)

Batman Beyond is celebrating its twentieth anniversary at SDCC! Voice actors Kevin Conroy (Bruce Wayne) and Will Friedle (Terry McGuiness) will headline a Hall H panel that will celebrate the game-changing animated series. Series producers Bruce Timm and Glen Murakami and legendary Emmy-winning casting director Andrea Romano are also expected to be in attendance.

You’re Wrong, Leonard Maltin (1 to 2 PM; Room 6BCF)

Celebrated film critic Leonard Maltin is heading to SDCC! The entertainment journalist along with his daughter, Jessie Maltin, will take on film aficionados in a spirited panel that celebrates the film industry!

Tom King (2 PM to 3 PM; Room 6DE)

Tom King’s stories have made headlines! From his beloved runs on Mister Miracle and The Vision to his controversial story arcs such as Batman and Heroes in Crisis, the former CIA operative’s writing has made readers talk.  The New York Times best-selling author will share his creative process at this SDCC panel.

Dragon Ball Z: 30th Anniversary Panel (2:15 PM to 3:15 PM; Room 6BCF)

30 years ago, a little known anime series called Dragon Ball Z (DBZ)  made its debut. The show made a significant impact on pop culture and made its characters such as Goku, Bulma, Vegeta, Frieza, and Cell household names. Atlanta Falcons wide receiver and DBZ superfan will moderate this SDCC panel featuring several of the show’s voice actors including Sean Schemmel (Goku), Christopher R. Sabat (Vegata), Sonny Strait (Krillin), and Monica Rial (Bulma).

Superstore (5:30 PM to 6:30 PM; Indigo Ballroom-Hilton San Diego Bayfront)

Cloud 9 employees are invading SDCC! Actors America Ferrera, Ben Feldman, Lauren Ash, and Nico Santos are scheduled to join Superstore executive producers Justin Spitzer, Gabe Miller, and Jonathan Green to talk about show’s upcoming fifth season.

SHAZAM! Documentary World Premiere (6 PM to 7 PM; Horton Grand Theatre)

End day one at SDCC by viewing a world premiere of the upcoming documentary focusing on Shazam. The documentary will feature interviews with some of the World’s Mightiest Mortal’s greatest creators including Jerry Ordway, Jeff Smith, and Geoff Johns, plus Shazam stars Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, and director David F. Sandberg.
