Jake’s Take’s New Music Reviews: Week of Nov. 26, 2021

Artists to Watch:

Jake’s Take’s Artists to Watch is back! Here are several artists and bands that are about ready to rock the music world.

Christmas – EP by Pia Mia

Multi-platinum recording artist Pia Mia just released her first holiday EP: Christmas. After a luscious introductory track set the mood, the “Do It Again” singer shared three different holiday-related tracks. Produced and arranged by Derrick “Bigg D” Baker and Canon Lamb, Christmas – EP is a hybrid between Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas and Kelly Clarkson’s classic Wrapped in Red.  Pia Mia’s superb vocals and superior production make Christmas – EP is a fantastic holiday record. A-

Tracks to Download: “Home,” “Unwrap Me,” & “NYE.”

“Chevelle” by The Brethren

The Brethren is a country rock group of two sets of brothers: Chad and Lonnie Chapin and Casey and Corey Parnell. All four men have worked with some of the best in the music industry. The group released a moving single called “Chevelle.” I loved the lyrics and music arrangement. I cannot wait to see how the Brethren shake up the country rock music genre. B+/A-

“Ruin It For The Next One” by GION

Montreal, Canada-based singer GION released a catchy break-up track: “Ruin It For The Next One.” Between the smooth production and the catchy lyrics, “Ruin It For the Next One” is perfect for Top 40 radio stations and streaming services. I am looking forward to seeing what GION does next. B+

“Devil That You Know” / “Lazy Eyes” by NHC

A new music supergroup has formed! Rock superstars Chris Chaney and Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction) teamed up with Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins to create the rock trio NHC (Navarro – Hawkins – Chaney). The trio released two new singles: “Devil That You Know” and “Lazy Eyes.” “Devil That You Know” is a slick guitar track with impeccable drumming from Hawkins. Meanwhile, “Lazy Eyes” might remind classic rock fans of Led Zeppelin and The Who’s heydays. I cannot wait to see what NHC brings to the table next year. B+

“God’s Country” by State of Mine featuring Drew Jacobs

Ever since I heard Broken Roots cover Blake Shelton’s “God’s Country” on America’s Got Talentit has quickly become one of my favorite country tracks. Mid-Michigan metal band State of Mind teamed up with rocker Drew Jacobs to cover the founding Voice coach’s anthem. I loved the arrangement from start to finish, and I think that the song’s writers Devin Dawson, Jordan Schmidt, and Hardy would be impressed with the group’s interpretation. A-

“Space Between Us” by VHS Collection

New York City-based VHS Collection rounds out this edition of Jake’s Take’s New Music Reviews! VHS Collection consists of James Bohannon, Conor Cook, and multi-instrumentalist and producer Nils Vanderlip. When I first heard their latest single: “Space Between Us,” it reminded me of U2’s music from the 2000s. I loved the pop and new wave-styled production, and it is an excellent start to their upcoming album: Night Drive. A-
