Jake’s Take’s New Music Reviews: Week of April 8, 2022

Artists to Watch:

Jake’s Take’s Artists to Watch highlights the up-and-coming recording artists and music groups that are making an impact in the recording industry.

Destination Unknown EP by Conkarah

Kingston, Jamaica native Conkarah, brings his vibrant “Island Pop” brand into the music industry. He describes “Island Pop” as combining reggae and dancehall music with tropical rhythms, classic songwriting, and irrelevant good humor. As I listened to Destination Unknown, I was utterly blown away by the superb arrangements and the incorporation of the featured artists (DJ Fle, Fiji, Romain Virgo, and Shaggy). Conkarah could be one of the most prominent international music artists we have seen in years! A-

“Fashion” by Harrison Barnes

I am very excited to exclusively feature Harrison Barnes’s latest single: “Fashion,” in the newest edition of Jake’s Take’s Artists to Watch! The South Carolina native turned Las Vegas transplant’s voice reminds me of fellow indie pop-EDM artists (and Jake’s Take friends), Davis Mallory and Frankie Zulferino. Like Davis and Frankie, Harrison has the potential to build a loyal following, and I would be very interested in seeing this song performed live in the future. B+

“My Gift Is My Song (ode to Sir Elton John)” by Hauser

Celebrated cellist Hauser paid homage to the legendary Sir Elton John with a massive arrangement of the music icon’s greatest hits. Elton John’s superfans would be delighted by Hauser’s interpretations of “Your Song,” “Candle in the Wind,” “Rocket Man,” “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word,” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” I got chills listening to this fantastic piece of music!

“We’ll Never Have Sex” by Leith Ross

Republic Records has officially welcomed Ottawa, Canada, native singer-songwriter Leith Ross to their label. Their first single, “We’ll Never Have Sex,” is one of the fastest pieces of music I have ever heard in my 11 years of writing music reviews. Leith has a gentle and haunting voice that reminds me of Lana Del Rey’s captivating vocals. They have a bright future ahead of them. B+

“I Can’t Help But Feel” by Surfaces

Texas-based pop duo Surfaces round out this edition of Jake’s Take’s New Music Reviews. Forrest Frank and Colin Padalecki’s lives were forever changed when they dropped their debut album, Surf. The duo have become streaming heroes five years later and even collaborated with Sir Elton John. Their latest single, “I Can’t Help But Feel,” is a strong single that could have “Song of the Summer” potential. I loved every minute of this song. A-
