Welcome back to Jake’s Take’s New Music Reviews! We got a lot of music to unpack, so let’s get this party started.

Camila Cabello's Familia cover album
Camila Cabello’s ‘Familia’ showcases her Cuban heritage. (Album cover property of Sony Music Entertainment)

Familia by Camila Cabello

Familia is Camila Cabello’s third solo studio outing. The “Havana” singer-songwriter recruited previous collaborator Ricky Reed, as the album’s executive producer. Familia contains several blockbuster singles, such as the Ed Sheeran-assisted “Bam Bam,” “La Buena Vida,” and the Willow-assisted “psychofreak.” Reed and fellow songwriters and producers Mike Sabath, Scott Harris, and Cheche Alara did an impeccable job production-wise. Familia continues to cement Camila’s star power, and we could see it in several media outlets’ best albums list of 2022. A-

Tracks to Download: “Bam Bam,” “Don’t Go Yet,” “psychofreak,” “La Buena Vida,” & “Hasta Los Dientes”

Machine Gun Kelly’s Mainstream Sellout was one of the worst albums that I heard this decade! (Album cover property of Bad Boy & Interscope Records)

Mainstream Sellout by Machine Gun Kelly

Machine Gun Kelly dropped his sixth studio album: Mainstream Sellout. The actor-musician has gone through so many changes to his musical career in such a short time (going from rap-rock to pop-punk) that it is hard to keep up with him. Mainstream Sellout features an all-star group of collaborators such as executive producer Travis Barker and featured artists Blackbear, Bring Me the Horizon, Lil Wayne, Willow Smith, and Young Thug. In all honesty, this album is a complete mess. It was difficult for me to find passion in MGK’s latest musical offering.

Humble Quest marks a new chapter in Maren Morris’s career. (Album cover property of Sony Music Entertainment)

Humble Quest by Maren Morris

Maren Morris’s third major-label studio album, Humble Quest, marks a new chapter for “The Middle” singer-songwriter. Celebrated music producer Greg Kurstin executed produced this album as Nashville mainstays Hillary Lindsey, Jimmy Robbins, Liz Rose, fellow Highwomen member Natalie Hemby, and her husband, Ryan Hurd; all assisted in crafting the songs.  Humble Quest does pack quite the punch as this record sets up to be her personal best. B+

Tracks to Download: “Circles Around This Town,” “Humble Quest,” “Background Music,” & “Nervous.”

Miley Cyrus’s first live album, Attention: Miley Live, is one of the best live music albums of this decade. (Album cover property of Columbia Records & Smiley Miley Inc)

Attention: Miley Live by Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus released her first live album in 14 years. The “Edge of Midnight” singer-songwriter recorded the record during her show at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 12, 2022. The album features a combination of her hits (“The Climb” and “Party in the U.S.A.”), covers of classic songs (“Heart of Glass,” “Jolene,” and “Like a Prayer”), and unexpected mash-ups (“We Can’t Stop” x “Where Is My Mind?”). Attention: Miley Live showcases why Miley Cyrus remains one of my generation’s top recording artists. She has the superb ability to adapt to every musical genre she tackles, including country, hip-hop, pop, and rock. A-

Tracks to Download: “Plastic Hearts,” “23,” “Bang Bang” x “See You Again,” “Jolene,”& “Like a Prayer.”

Thomas Rhett’s Where We Started features new songs and duet with Katy Perry. (Album cover property of Big Machine Label Group)

Where We Started by Thomas Rhett

Over the past few years, Thomas Rhett has become country music’s top performers. CMT reported that the “Look What God Gave Her” singer-songwriter’s children picked out what tracks made his sixth studio album. Where We Started does pick up where Center Point Road left off. Some of the tracks such as “Bass Pro Hat,” the Riley Green-assisted “Half of Me,” and “Anything Cold” remind me of the bro-country music that is slowly going the way of the dodo bird. However, songs such as “Angels,” “Slow Down Summer,” and the title track, a duet with Katy Perry, showcase why Thomas Rhett has amassed a supportive group of fans. C+

Tracks to Download: “Angels,” “Slow Down Summer,” &  “Where We Started.”
