Jake’s Take’s New Music Reviews: Week of April 3, 2020

Artists to Watch:

Jake’s Take’s Artists to Watch is back! Here are a few bands and recording artists that I believe could shake up the music world.

Jessie Reyez’s Before Love Came to Kill Us could be a breakout R&B album that could make her one of 2020’s top music artists. (Album cover property of FMLY & Island Records)

Before Love Came to Kill Us by Jessie Reyez

Canadian singer-songwriter and Island Records recording artist Jessie Reyez is riding high after being nominated for a Grammy and two MTV Video Music Awards. She just dropped her highly anticipated debut album: Before Love Came to Kill Us. For some music aficionados, Reyez could be another wannabe Billie Eilish. However, the fact that Billboard reported that the five-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter invited Jessie to join her on the now-canceled Where Do We Go? Tour as a supporting act speaks volumes. Are Jessie’s lyrics a little disturbing? Yes, but I have to applaud her production team, who helped her execute this superb album. Keep an ear out for Eminem and 6Lack, who made cameos on her record. I believe that not only Before Love Came to Kill Us could take the music industry by storm, but 2020 and 2021 could be significant years for Ms. Reyez. A-

Tracks to Download: “DO YOU LOVE HER,” “COFFIN,” “IMPORTED,” “LA MEMORIA,” & “LOVE IN THE DARK.”

Hollywoodland marks Miles Morrison’s arrival in the music industry. (Album property of Epic Records)

Hollywoodland by Miles Morrison

Epic Records might have found their label’s answer to Machine Gun Kelly. Fenton, Michigan native turned Los Angeles transplant Miles Morrison dropped his debut EP: Hollywoodland. This eight-track EP showcases that the rising social media influencer came to conquer the charts and streaming services. Throughout Hollywoodland, Miles superbly blends various music genres and introduces his world to the listeners. Miles has potential, and I think he is just getting started. B+

Tracks to Download: “I’m So Lost,” “Hannycap,” “Bad for My Health,” & “Take Me Away.”

Eddie Benjamin’s “F— My Friends” might launch his skyrocketing music career. (Video property of Epic Records)

“F—My Friends” by Eddie Benjamin

Another Epic Records artist that could find himself at the top of the charts is Eddie Benjamin. This 18-year-old virtuoso dropped his first single: “F— My Friends.” I feel like I am watching a young Ed Sheeran blossom before my eyes. The two-minute song gives music aficionados the best of both worlds: a superb vocalist and a phenomenal arranger. I think he could be one of 2020’s most significant breakout stars. B+/A-

Skyfever’s “The Wait” is definitely one of the best rock songs of 2020! (Music video property of Graft Records)

“The Wait” by Skyfever

Ireland-based rock band Skyfever might be one of the country’s most significant discoveries since the Script. This four-piece rock band has already made an impression on rock music’s most prominent influencers, including AC/DC’s Chris Slade and Alice Cooper. Their latest single, “The Wait,” could be the group’s coming out party to the music industry. “The Wait” is an epic arena rock track that deserves to be blasted on various radio stations and streaming services. I predict that Skyfever could be a force to be reckoned with in the international rock music community. B+/A-
