One of today’s biggest pop princesses, Katy Perry, is in the midst of her third world tour: The Prismatic World Tour.
After conquering the United Kingdom, Canada and most of the continental United States, the two-time American Music Award-winning songstress took her show to Kansas City’s Sprint Center.
As ecstatic KatyCats of all ages made their way towards their seats (my friends: Jake, Shannon, Preeti, Dan and I were way up at the top of the Sprint Center), they were entertained by Ms. Perry’s two opening acts. Up first, LA-based singer-songwriter Ferras!
Ferras is the “Hot n Cold” singer’s first signed artist to her record label: Metamorphosis Music. He had a remarkable stage presence and a strong voice that with time and more experience, Ferras is going to play an important role in the music industry.
Two-time Grammy winner Kacey Musgraves got the crowd on their feet as she took us to her neon dessert. This stop was particularly important to Ms. Musgraves as she told the audience that most of her family lives in Missouri and that her grandparents were in the building. She warmly engaged with the crowd as she tackled some of her hits that included “Merry Go ‘Round” and “Mama’s Broken Heart.” The definite highlight of her set was a rousing cover of Nancy Sinatra’s iconic “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’.”
Finally, after hours of waiting and countless of waves from the crowd, Katy came on the stage. Throughout the two-and-a-half hours that Ms. Perry was on stage, the Prismatic World Tour became one of my favorite concerts of all-time!
Ms. Perry and her creative team brilliantly rejuvenated some of her most iconic songs. They transformed “Hot n Cold” into a Broadway-inspired number, gave “I Kissed A Girl” the “Thriller” treatment and changed “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” into an Hip-hop/Dubstep anthem.
Some of her best vocals came from the Christian Pop anthem “By the Grace of God” and the acoustic mash-up of “The One That Got Away” and “Thinking of You.” Other honorable mentions included “Legendary Lovers, “Hot n Cold” and “Unconditionally.”
In addition to changing up the hits, the show took visuals to a whole new level of excellence. The lasers transformed Sprint Center into a planetarium and an over-the-top Disney production and Katy’s high-flying stunts with “Dark Horse” and “Birthday” made left her audience in awe.
Final thoughts and grade: Katy Perry cemented her status as Pop Princess and future Queen of Pop with this stunning spectacular that makes The Prismatic World Tour one of the best live shows of the 2010s. A+
