Jake’s Take’s New Music Reviews: Week of September 18, 2020

Artists to Watch

Jake’s Take’s Artists to Watch is back! Here are some of the recording artists that I believe could shake up the music industry.

Ava Max’s Heaven & Hell is one of Jake’s Take favorite breakout albums of 2020! (Album cover property of Atlantic Records & Artist Partner Group)

Heaven & Hell by Ava Max

I first heard of Ava Max when she made a cameo on Jake’s Take friend AJ Mitchell’s “Slow Dance.” Now, the “Sweet but Psycho” singer-songwriter released her debut album: Heaven & Hell. By the time I listened to the breakout track “Kings & Queens,” I felt like I was listening to Lady Gaga and Sia’s little sister. There were a lot of influential hitmakers that helped Ava Max bring this project to life. Bonnie McKee, Charlie Puth, RedOne, Shellback, and Tove Lo co-wrote the tracks, while most production fell on Cirkut’s responsibility. Heaven & Hell is probably one of the strongest debut albums I heard this year, and I cannot wait to hear more music from Ava Max. A+

Songs to Download: “Kings & Queens,” “Naked,” “OMG What’s Happening,” “Call Me Tonight,” & “Sweet but Psycho.”

Betty Moon’s Little Miss Hollywood has something for every music lover. (Album cover courtesy of Bradley Publicity)

Little Miss Hollywood by Betty Moon

Betty Moon just dropped her latest album: Little Miss Hollywood. I love this album because Betty Moon blended pop rock, rock, and techno-pop, which results in splendid pieces of ear candy. From the guitar licks from the title track to the hypnotic Lenny Kravitz-esque “Your Dirty Love,” Little Miss Hollywood has something from every music aficionado. I truly believe that Ms. Moon is an artist that the music industry needs right now! A-

Songs to Download: “Little Miss Hollywood,” “Did It For Nothing,” “The Liar,” & “Don’t Stop Now.”

Eric Dash’s “I Just Need to Get Away” could remind a lot of 90s kids of Barenaked Ladies’ “One Week” & Smash Mouth’s “All Star.” (Music video property of Eric Dash)

I Just Need to Get Away” by Eric Dash

Songwriter and producer Eric Dash released a new single that anyone can relate to. “I Just Need to Get Away’ reminds me of a modern-day version of Barenaked Ladies’ “One Week” or Smash Mouth’s “All Star.” Both Eric Dash’s lyrics and production value were superb. If he releases more material like “I Just Need to Get Away,” I believe that there would be more opportunities for Eric to shine. B+

Liza Owen’s “Getting Good” showcases shades of P!nk’s “Feel Good Time” and could lead to a bright future for the UK-based singer-songwriter. (Music video property of Epic Records)

“Getting Good” by Liza Owen

UK-based singer-songwriter Liza Owen is the latest UK artist to be featured in the Jake’s Take’s Artists to Watch. When music lovers first hear “Getting Good,” it might remind them of P!nk’s 2003 hit “Feel Good Time.” Liza Owen’s vocals will immediately hook in the listener, and ASL’s production value took the song to a level of excellence.

Rising music star Philmon Lee & YouTube sensation Lindsey Stirling delivered a beautiful song: “No Saving Me.” (Music video property of Epic Records)

No Saving Me” by Philmon Lee featuring Lindsey Stirling

Earlier this year, Epic Records recording artist Philmon Lee captured the music world’s attention with his powerful track: “Memories.” The LaGrange, Georgia native released a new single that featured AGT alum and YouTube sensation Lindsey Stirling. “No Saving Me” gave me chills thanks to the combination of Philmon’s haunting vocals and Lindsey’s eloquent string arrangement. “No Saving Me” is one of the most beautiful and touching songs of the year.
