Six years ago, I went to see the first gathering of superheroes that the cinema world has ever seen. That gathering was The Avengers. For the first time, the world got to see Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johannsson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) team up to face Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and his ugly alien army.
The film turned out to be a box office success and opened to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to introduce more characters such as Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians of the Galaxy to a brand-new generation of fans. Six years later, Marvel Studios released the third chapter in the Avengers history.
Avengers: Infinity War fully introduced the mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin) to the party. The villain who audiences saw at the end of both The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron plus Guardians of the Galaxy made his presence known to the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Thanos had two Infinity Stones in his possession, and his primary goal was to complete the collection so that he could rule the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The only obstacles that are in Thanos’ way to universal domination are the MCU heroes. However, the heroes are splintered up into small fractions before converging into two groups by the time everyone is ready to fight Thanos and his army. Before the significant battles, co-screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely delivered lots of delightful dialogue with unforgettable pairs such as Iron Man and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Thor and Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper).
In addition to the impeccable cast of established players, several characters were introduced to the MCU. Thanos’s followers, the Black Order, serve their purpose as the secondary antagonists. Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, Ebony Maw, and Cull Obsidian (originally Black Dwarf in the comics) might frighten younger fans, but they prove to be worthy challengers to our heroes.
Avengers: Infinity War has a lot of twists and turns throughout the nearly three hour film. There are a lot of great plot twists that are awaiting the movie watcher. However, a fair warning…there are some surprising deaths in this film, so bring tissues and bandanas because you might be shedding tears.
Final thoughts and grade: Avengers: Infinity War not only celebrates Marvel Studios’ first ten years of storytelling, but it also leaves it audiences in suspense. Make Mine Marvel! A-
