Jacob’s Eye On….Kansas City Film Fest 2013-The Films

Tomorrow, film fans will congregate at the Alamo Drafthouse in Kansas City to see over 113 movies in a span of five days (April 10-14, 2013).

Out of all the movies that will be shown at this event, here are several films that should be on any attendee’s viewing list:

Heartland: A Portrait of Survival (Wednesday, April 10 & Sunday, April 14)

Erica Tremblay’s 63-minute documentary focuses on the devastating May 2011 tornado that shook Joplin, Missouri to its core.  Tremblay weaves home movies, police dispatch reports and news broadcasts that showcases Joplin weeks after the tornado hit the town.   (Photo by Patrick Wilkins)

The Discoverers (Wednesday, April 10; Friday, April 12 & Sunday, April 14)

Justin Schwartz’s road movie The Discoverers focuses on Professor Lewis Birch  (Griffin Dunne)’s dysfunctional family as they search for a lost family member as part of a Lewis and Clark historical reenactment society.

A Teacher (Thursday, April 11 and Friday, April 12)

Hannah Fidell’s drama focuses on an affair between Austin, Texas high school teacher Diana Watts (Lindsay Burdge) and one of her students, Eric Tull (Will Brittain).

Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony (Thursday, April 11 and Saturday, April 13)

Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony is a 90-minute documentary that showcases how the television show My Little Pony attracted guy fans and how they became obsessed with it.    The film’s executive producer John de Lancie and producer Michael Brockhoff will attend the Thursday night showing.

The Central Park Five (Friday, April 12 & Sunday, April 14)

24 years ago, five black and Latino teenagers were wrongfully accused and spent years in prison for a crime for attacking the woman known as a the Central Park Jogger.  Legendary filmmaker Ken Burns teamed up with his daughter, Sarah and son-in-law David McMahon, to bring this injustice to the silver screen.
