Jacob Reviews…The Ides of March

WARNING: SPOILER ALERTS

Greed is more powerful than the truth.

This is the message that is echoed throughout George Clooney’s latest film The Ides of March.  Ides is a political drama that centers on Junior Campaign Manager Stephen Meyers (played by Ryan Gosling), who helps organize Democratic Presidential Candidate Senator Mike Morris (played by Clooney)’s campaign and is caught in the turmoil that is campaign politics.

The film’s ensemble is an incredible gathering of actors.  One of the standouts includes Paul Giamatti, who plays rival campaign manager Tom Duffy.  Giamatti’s character is a total jerk that sprinkles seeds of doubt into Meyers’ head and offers him a position on his team—Morris’ opponent: Senator Pullman (played by Michael Mantell).    Other standouts include Oscar-winning actors Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Marisa Tomei, who play Morris’ head campaign manager Paul Zara and fame-seeking New York Times reporter Ida Horowicz, respectively.

Ides of March’s screenplay was co-written by George Clooney, Grant Heslov and Beau Willimon, whose book Farragut North was the basis of this movie.  This brilliant screenplay delivered incredible scenes from the first meeting of Meyers and campaign intern Molly Stearns (played by Evan Rachel Wood) to Meyers being fired from Morris’ campaign by Zara.   Each of these scenes stood out as well acted and believable.

Ides of March is Clooney’s best multi-tasking films to date.  He still has the acting chops as playing the corrupt politician and his directing skills for this movie is on par to his 2005 success Good Night, and Good Luck.

Final Thoughts and Overall Grade: With strong messages and incredible acting, The Ides of March will be a force to be reckoned with coming awards season. A-

  1. michael caine is one of the single best actors of all time, seen nearly all his movies (probably all of them!) and im sorry but you cant teach someone to act like that. His ability is instinctive, natural and not something you can learn. He will be written in the history books as one of, if not the greatest actor of all time!

  2. I’ve been browsing on-line greater than three hours these days, but I by no means discovered any interesting article like yours. It’s pretty price sufficient for me. In my view, if all web owners and bloggers made just right content as you probably did, the internet will likely be much more useful than ever before.
