Jacob Reviews….The Amazing Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield perfectly balanced being a smart aleck and an adventure seeker in “Amazing Spider-Man” (Poster property of Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment.)

10 years ago, Spider-Man blasted from the comics and onto the silver screen as Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker battled Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.

Recently, Marvel and Sony released the first film in a potential new trilogy that focused on the Wall Crawler.  The Amazing Spider-Man featured great acting, impeccable cinematography and superb special effects that were sprinkled all throughout the film.

While many fans would have the ability to compare Maguire with Andrew Garfield, who portrays Peter Parker in the new film, they would have a hard time finding similarities between the two Parkers.   Garfield’s Peter Parker perfectly blends being a smart aleck and an adventure seeker.    Other standouts in this film include Martin Sheen and Sally Field, who amazingly portray Ben and May Parker respectively.  Sheen’s portrayal of the character was on par to the late Cliff Roberson’s take on the character while Field brought out a combination of spunk and independence that was absent in Rosemary Harris’s portrayal in the Raimi films.

What Amazing Spider-Man great was its cinematography.   All of the cinematography in the film was very crisp and showed dozens of superb shots.    Several of my favorite scenes included Peter learning to use his webs and swinging in the abandoned warehouse.   Another strong scene that moviegoers would like is the confrontation between Spider-Man and the Lizard (Rhys Ifans).   This battle had multiple elements involved between extras and various props and the cinematographers were perfectly able to capture that fight.

One of the things that I was skeptical about this film was how they were going to portray the Lizard.    They had two routes: one, do the same job that they did with Venom in Spider-Man 3 which failed to make him scary or evolve him to CGI perfection.   Moviegoers will be happy to know that the special effects artists decided to go with the latter.    The monstrous Lizard was a great villain for the film because of Ifans’ portrayal of the antagonist and the crew’s incredible work on the character.

The only problem that moviegoers would have is the lack and misrepresentation of crucial pieces in the Spider-Man origin including a short period as a wrestler, the absence of crucial characters including J. Jonah Jameson, Betty Brant and Mary Jane Watson and the unnecessary addition of Gwen’s mother and brothers.

Overall:  Amazing Spider-Man is great reboot that will inspire another generation of superhero lovers to gravitate to the Spider-Man mythology and leave many moviegoers excited for a sequel.  A-

Spidey, then Dark Knight Rises. I’m more excited for the latter, but still. I’m excited for Spidey. So as I read this I thought that you may be interested in something that a lot of bloggers are (hopefully) going to get into. Check out my blog to read more about it.
