For many singer-songwriters, finding the right musicians to record their material is a difficult process because it could be the starting or breaking point of a career.   One of the newest companies that can help songwriters connect with studio musicians is Record Together.   The CEO of Record Together Mike Bishop took time out of his day to talk about the site and his company’s goals for the next couple of years.

Jacob Elyachar: What is the purpose of this site?

Mike Bishop: RecordTogether.com is a website that aims to connect songwriters with studio musicians through online collaboration.

JE: Could you describe how your tools would help inspiring singers-songwriters?

MB: We allow songwriters to connect with musicians they wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to record with and purchase the recording rights directly from them.  This will allow a songwriter to pick from a pool of submissions to find the perfect part for their song.  This saves the songwriter both time and money spent on hiring session musicians, and saves the cost of studio time.  Studio musicians are paid quickly and directly from the website.

JE: How do you pick your musicians that are featured on your site?

MB: Anyone can sign up as a musician on the site.  They can record and submit their additions to the songwriter, and the songwriter can comment and make suggestions on what the musician uploaded.  If the songwriter likes your part enough he can buy the track instantly.  RecordTogether.com also acts as a sort of escrow service, ensuring that the songwriter gets the raw audio file, and the musician gets paid instantly.

JE: One of the events that you offer on your site is a contest? Could you please describe what a contest is to the readers?

MB: A contest is started by a songwriter who is looking for an addition to his song recording.  For example, a Country artist may be looking for a real Hammond B3/Leslie Organ with rotating speaker for his song.  He would submit a description of what he is looking for and it is posted publicly to the community.  Anybody can download the source track, put it into their recording DAW software, and upload their addition.  The songwriter places a bounty amount (in American dollars) for what they are willing to pay for the track.  If the studio musician’s track is chosen, they get paid the bounty amount and the songwriter owns the rights to the recording.

JE: What do you and your colleagues hope to see Record Together in the next three years?

MB: 2015 is a long ways away, but we want to see the website continue to grow the way that it has, and attract more talented musicians to join the community.  Advances in consumer grade recording gear have made a great sounding home studio setup surprisingly affordable.  The more quality musicians we can attract, the more everyone can benefit from a service such as this.
