It is a pleasure to welcome singer, songwriter, and producer Yoshi Flower to Jake’s Take.

Yoshi Flower is making noise in the music industry by combining his passion for EDM, hip-hop, and rock into one slick sound. Recently, he signed with the Universal Music Group’s Interscope Records label. His single, “Brown Paper Bag,” caught the attention of Zane Lowe’s World First. Also, Paper Magazine predicted that Yoshi Flower would be one of the 100 people taking over 2019 and was featured on Billboard’s website.

He also released his extended play: American Raver.  The EP features collaborations with Jesse Rutherford, Reddish Blu, and Skywalkr. Yoshi Flower is expected to perform the entire EP on his American Raver tour. The tour will visit Chicago, Detroit, New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

In this edition of A Conversation, Yoshi Flower opened up about his songwriting process, revealed his dream all-star collaboration list, and previewed his upcoming American Raver tour.

Jacob Elyachar: When did you get interested in music? How did that passion evolve into the desire of becoming a professional musician?

Yoshi Flower: I listened to music all day when I got a Sony CD player that had the advanced non-skip feature. I started with (Jimi) Hendrix’s greatest hits and then when I got my first iPod, it was all over for me. It (music) was the ultimate escape and portal and expression. It was my first drug, my first love.

Jacob Elyachar: Could you please describe your songwriting process to my readers?

Yoshi Flower: I wake up, breathe, f*** up, and forgive. I also love, let go, forget, and remember. Also, I try not to die and hope that stuff comes to me, to be honest. I write a lot of terrible personal beats and little ditties that is just for fun and eventually I make something that I feel like someone else might feel. Things only come through me from a place that I do not know exists. I’m not concerned with finding where it comes from really.

Jacob Elyachar: What are some of the biggest challenges that you faced breaking into the international music market? How did you overcome those obstacles?

Yoshi Flower: There is a lot of noise out there, a lot of fantastic art and music, we are in a fantastic time of creation! I do not know if I have broken into any market because I focus on making things and talking with my supporters and music friends.

Jacob Elyachar: Let’s talk about the American Raver tour. What can your fans expect from this tour?

Yoshi Flower: I will be playing American Raver start to finish. Then there will be a little intermission, and then I will play the bangers, and we will rage.

Jacob Elyachar: Which singers, songwriters, or producers are on your dream collaborative list?

Yoshi Flower: Kanye, Paul McCartney, Kevin Parker’s drums, Ben Gibbard’s writing, Julian Casablancas everything, Alex Turner’s pen game, Pino Palladino’s bass, and the list goes on.

Jacob Elyachar: If you had the opportunity to meet with aspiring singer-songwriters who want to work in the music industry, what advice would you share with them?

Yoshi Flower: I would say that you never know what is going to happen in life, it is not really up to us, it is sort of a higher power running through us. With that being said be honest and do what compels you. Make things, do not be precious, do not be pretentious. The illusion is that there is something to get, but we only get what we give.
