After reviewing reports from the New York Times, Variety and the Wall Street Journal, Jake’s Take can confirm that actor-director Philip Seymour Hoffman has passed away.
The New York Police Department stated that Hoffman died in his West Village apartment in Manhattan, NY. While officials have not confirmed the cause of death, both Variety and ABC News reported that there were injectable drugs on the scene.
Mr. Hoffman was born on July 23, 1967 in Fairpoint, New York to parents Marilyn O’Conner and Gordon Stowell Hoffman. While attending Fairmont High School, Mr. Hoffman attended the 1984 Theater School at the New York State Summer School of the Arts. After graduation, he pursued his dream of acting at both the Circle in the Square Theatre’s summer program and traveled to New York University and received a Bachelors of Fine Arts in drama in 1989.
He decided to tackle the entertainment industry head on! His first televised role was on Law and Order and it lead him onto the path to the Silver Screen. Mr. Hoffman continued to grow as an artist with appearances in films including Twister, Boogie Nights, the Big Lebowski, Patch Adams and Along Came Polly.
However, his career began to skyrocket in the 2000s. He found his stride with his astonishing portrayals of Lancaster Dodd in the Master, Paul Zara in the Ides of March, Father Brendan Flynn in Doubt and his creepy (and masterful) master-class performance as author Truman Capote in Capote. He later won an Academy Award, a BAFTA, a SAG and Golden Globe for his portrayal of the iconic writer.
In addition to his roles on the Silver Screen, Mr. Hoffman began to expand his repertoire to the theatre world. He sought after directorial roles as well as acting roles. His work on Long Day’s Journey into Night, Jack Goes Boating and Death of a Salesman earned him multiple Drama Desk Awards and Tony Awards nominations.
Mr. Hoffman is survived by his partner of 15 years, Mimi O’Donnell, and his three children.
